In the North of Kenya, next to Lake Turkana, we can find one of the poorest areas on the planet, where the lack of resources, difficult living conditions and isolation from the rest of the country make the large region one of the most disadvantaged in the whole African continent.
That's why we chose this destination some years ago to develop our surgical project. A lot of people already collaborate in this charity adventure, through which every year we try to bring a little bit of hope to the people of Turkana.
Cirugía en Turkana was born in 2004, thanks to the initiative of some of the General Surgeons from the Hospital Ramón y Cajal, headed by the Dr. Elena Mendia, who formed a team and set out for the Lodwar District Hospital, in the region of Turkana.
Since then, every year we have carried out a surgical campaign in the Hospital, and various hospitals from Madrid, including the Clínico San Carlos and the Hospital de Alcalá have partnered up.
Cirugía en Turkana is a Surgical Project, our main goal is to give surgical assistance to the population of Turkana.
Every campaign involves a team of:
- General Surgeons
On some occasions we have relied on help of other specialists:
- Maxillofacial Surgeon
- Orthopedic Surgeon
Others campaigns have also relied on the help of theatre nurses.
