88 pairs signed up, making it the WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT with the highest turnout in pairs ever held in THE COMMUNITY OF MADRID. It was a complete success thanks to the DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS of the TOWN COUNCIL OF BOADILLA DEL MONTE and to the group of enthusiastic women padel players, who with their goodwill, passion and kindness, also managed to organise a CHARITY RAFFLE, in which all the sponsors donated gifts.
It all started this year in Turkana. I, Charo San Román, was lucky enough to be able to go and help out as a General Surgeon in a surgical project organisedin cooperation with CIRUGIA EN TURKANA . And, despite having been explained the situation beforehand, when I actually got there I was deeply shocked by what I saw. On one hand, the situation of poverty is almost impossible to describe, with some totally subhuman hospital practices, but on the other hand there is such joy, happiness and desire to live.
I started to think about how I could help, other than through my work. I sent a message to my padel partner, Lourdes Comas. It was a message asking for help, to raise money for a child who was severely ill child and needed 7,000 euros to be able to stay live. Just 7,000 euros. He could stay alive for just 7,000 euros. And, when I got back to Boadilla, there was a revolution. A meeting had been set up with the councillor for sports and the mayor with the aim of organising a charity padel tournament. A padel tournament in which various businesses from Boadilla donated gifts. And it was a complete success.
Not only did we manage for 88 women pairs to sign up. We managed much more. We managed to unite a town in Madrid and for them to join us in trying to help a child and his family. We organised a CHARITY RAFFLE WITH GIFTS DONATED BY PEOPLE LIVING IN BOADILLA DEL MONTE AND ONE RESIDENT EVEN MADE CHARITY NECKLACES TO RAISE FUNDS.
All of this was done for Derick, a child who needed our help. In total we raised more than 9,000 euros and were pleased with the result. Derick was not able to overcome his illness, but the money will surely help another child like Derick to be able to keep living a healthy life.
